An Overview On BFWO’s Malnutrition Treatment Process Under TSFP | 2024-11-21 03:58:50 | Projects

In the past 3 months BFWO has covered over 3000 pregnant and lactating mothers (PLW) and 4000 children suffering from acute and moderate malnutrition through TSFP program in Kunduz, Kunar and Nangarhar provinces.

The Targeted Supplementary Feeding Program (TSFP) is One of the World Food Organization (WFP) programs that provides special nutritious supplements and medical care for the treatment of moderately malnourished children (MAM) and PLW.

Under the TSFP’s program framework, BFWO provides health care to acutely malnourished children aged 6 to 59 months, and PLWs with acute malnutrition.

The teams initially diagnose the malnourished mothers and children by measuring the arm size, height, weight ratio and the symptoms of acute malnutrition. After testing the child's appetite by RUSF (Special Food for Malnourished Children), if there is no appetite, the child is returned to in-patient care, and if the symptoms of moderate malnutrition are observed, the mothers and children are included in the TSFP program for whom the required cards are distributed to for tracking and the continuous treatment.

During the treatment, RUSF is distributed to children with moderate acute malnutrition while Super Cereal (nutritious flour) is distributed to PLWs. On the other hand, this process also contains counseling sessions with mothers for raising their awareness about good nutrition.

In this process, children are also referred to other treatments such as vaccines, deworming, and other health care services, while the PLWs are referred to prenatal and postnatal care.
